Trash Pickup
There are three types of rubbish services in place.
- Regular Rubbish This consists of picking up your regular garbage consisting of a mixture of garbage and rubbish (not yard waste or recyclables) on a weekly basis, every Wednesday, with trash set out on Wednesday morning, at the end of your driveway and in metal or plastic containers or plastic bags. The Association expects you to put all your trash in 32 gallon containers, however, on those exceptional occasions when you have additional trash the use of sturdy large black plastic garbage bags is acceptable. However, this should be an occasional use and you must assure that the bags are sturdy and that the trash does not end up all over the complex. All metal or plastic containers must not be less than 10 gallons or more than 32 gallons. Plastic bags must not be less than 10 gallons or more than 32 gallons in capacity and at least two mil in thickness. Cardboard boxes and plastic grocery bags are not acceptable containers. These requirements for the size of containers and the thickness of plastic bags are Farmington Hills city regulations.
- Recycling (Green Bin) This program
came into existence due to State and Federal mandates. This
service pertains to weekly pickup on Wednesday utilizing your
green plastic container to dispose of bottles, cans, plastic,
paper, etc. Magazines and catalogs; tie with string or strong
rubber band. You should use the lid with this container so that
papers do not end up blowing out and around the complex.
Newspaper and Inserts; Include glossy inserts with your
newspaper (no need to separate). Place loose in bin, tucked to
one side or in paper grocery bags. Telephone books are now
accepted as well as magazines. Place the following loose in the
re-cycle bin, not in bags;
- Clear, green and brown glass bottles, jars and lids. Rinse container and leave label on. ·
- Tin cans, aluminum cans, clean aluminum foil and aluminum food trays. Rinse or wash if necessary (No Food). Leave label on.
- Narrow-mouth plastic bottles and lids. Rinse container, flatten and leave labels on.
- The following items are not accepted for recycling. Do not put in the green container: butter tubs or yogurt cups, even if coded with 1 and 2, motor oil or anti-freeze containers, plastic bags or plastic containers numbered 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, window glass, light bulbs, dishes, ceramics and Pyrex.
- Yard Waste Yard Waste is collected April through November. Yard Waste consists of items such as flowers, grass, dirt, leaves and bundled brush. Branches are not to exceed 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length, or 60 lbs. in weight per bundle. These items must be in a rigid 32 gallon container marked YARD WASTE or in paper waste bags. The yard bags are available at local retailers, as well as the City of Farmington Hills DPW, Southfield DPW or Hardware stores.
Rubbish is to be curbside at 7:00 am on Wednesday, but not before 6PM the day before pick-up. Bulk items such as appliances and furniture need only be placed at the curb on your regular pick-up day by 7:00 am.
Rubbish will not be collected on the following Holidays:
If the holiday falls during the week, your rubbish will be picked up a day later than usual. For example, Wednesday’s trash will be picked up Thursday and Thursday collections will be picked up on Friday. For a more detailed list of regulations, please call the Division of Public Works, 248-553-8580
If you must put your trash out early (but not before 6PM the day before pick-up), please use your sturdy, 32 gallon container. (Animals get into plastic bags and leave a mess.)
Make sure your trash containers are picked up and returned to the garage Wednesday night. Farmington Hills regulations require that all containers must be removed from the curb no later than 12 hours following collection. Leaving this container out over night can pose a security problem.
